Jennifer Tam topples Angie Leung to claim Women’s Singles title at New Zealand Junior International
Australia’s Jennifer Tam displayed a phenomenal performance as she claimed Women’s Singles title after toppling Angie Leung in the title match of 2012 New Zealand Junior International 2012 on Sunday, May 13, in New Zealand.
Jennifer, who was third seed in Women’s Singles draw of the championship, had to dig into her reserves to overwhelm her local opponent Angie in a hard-fought three-set competition.
The higher ranked Australian lost the first game but powered her way back and took the following two games with a narrow margin on the board.
On the other hand, Angie played well in opening game and won it but failed to maintain her form in the following games and lost the contest with a respectable score in 43 minutes.
In the first game, Jennifer started to play with impressive control but failed to build an early lead as her lower ranked opponent was playing flawless badminton.
Angie was in impressive form and she managed to set up a remarkable lead until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Jennifer tried to end the domination of her rival while working hard in the court but failed to take any advantage and lost the set with a margin of 18-21.
However, Jennifer changed the tempo of rallies in the second game when she played with precision and remained in charge this time. She managed a wonderful lead on the score board until the 60-second mid-game break.
After the interval, the higher ranked Australian continued her positive and elevated play in the second set and won it with a stunning margin of 21-10.
In the deciding set, Angie put up strong resistance in the opening half and remained close to her higher ranked Australian rival.
After the interval, both shuttlers continued playing thrilling game without dropping the pace of rallies.
The score reached at the ending points of final game when Jennifer put up sensational show of composed and attacking badminton and took the set with a tight 21-19 score on the board.
Jennifer won the Women’s Singles crown by winning the title match in a spectacular fashion with a margin of 18-21, 21-10 and 21-19.
