Jenny Mensing dominates Women’s 200m backstroke heats: Day six – British Gas Swimming Championships
Jenny Mensing of Germany dominated the qualification rounds of the Women’s 200m backstroke on sixth day of the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Thursday, March 8.
The British Gas tournament serves as the Selection Trials for the 2012 London Olympic Games and offers an opportunity to their local talent to prove their eligibility for the mega event.
The 26-year-old Mensing demonstrated her exhausting efforts in the preliminary round of the four-lap backstroke swim. With her remarkable sprint, she qualified in to the semi-final as top fastest swimmer as she concluded her sprint in a time of 2 minutes
and 10.53 seconds.
Her impressive performance remained 0.60 seconds ahead of her following rival, Elizabeth Simmonds of Loughborough University, who finished second by posting 2 minutes and 11.13 seconds. Simmonds was trailed by Stephanie Proud of Chester Le S, who stayed
0.03 seconds away from her preceding swimmer and ended third with an effort of 2 minutes and 11.16 seconds.
Subsequently, Sascha Kindred snared top qualifying position in the Men’s Multi Class (MC) 200m Individual Medley (IM). Kindred smothered struggles of his challengers and ended first with the timing of 2 minutes and 44.51 seconds.
He was followed by James Crisp of Co Sheffield, who clinched second best qualification spot of the event by concluding his race in a time of 2 minutes and 24.17 seconds. Robert Welbourn of Swansea Perf emerged as the third fastest qualifying swimmer of the
event as he completed his swim in a time of 2 minutes and 22.44 seconds.
The last event of the session was Women’s 200m IM qualification rounds, where Eleanor Simmonds went full throttle and upset her challengers by clocking an effort of 3 minutes and 13.49 seconds.
She was followed by Natalie Jones of Colchester P, who was 1.25 seconds slower and posted 3 minutes and 14.74 seconds. Co Manchester Aquatics’ Rhiannon Henry gained third position of the discipline as she reported a time of 2 minutes and 35.67 seconds.
The session ended after the conclusion of all scheduled events in Men and Women’s category whereas these swimmers will compete with each other in the next rounds of their respective events.
