Jenny Mensing excels in Women’s 200m back-stroke – 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
National record holder, Jenny Mensing of SC Wiesbaden 1911 excelled in the Women’s 200m back-stroke on day two of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
The championship is a trial selection of the German swimmers. The main objective of the trial is to identify the German swimming team that will compete at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
The 25-year-old Mensing claimed the back-stroke gold medal in a time of 2:10.21 minutes.  She was almost four seconds away from the second finisher, Lisa Graf of SSG Leipzig, who occupied the silver medal on the podium, clocking a time of 2:14.27 minutes.
They were followed by Paula Beyer of SC Magdeburg, who appeared on the podium for the bronze medal, with timing of 2:15.63 minutes.
Mensing was almost six seconds above the world record of 2:04.81 minutes, held by Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe. Her winning time was 5.27 seconds above the European mark of 2:04.94 minutes, made by Anastasia Zueva of Russia at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
Similarly, she was 1.41 seconds slower than her own national record of 2:08.80 minutes.
The 25-year-old started off brilliantly and looked in formidable form as she swam her way towards the gold medal. She ended her first lap with a fastest time of 30.52 seconds. Lisa and Paula appeared second and third fastest on the wall behind her, clocking
a time of 31.43 and 31.83 minutes, respectively.
The German sustained her fastest spot in the next lap, where she completed her first round in 1:03.50 minutes. She was almost one second ahead of Graf, who completed her first round in the second fastest time of 1:04.64 minutes.
In the next lap, Mensing extended her lead to almost two seconds, finishing her swim in 1:36.67 minutes against Lisa’s timing of 1:38.82 minutes.
In the last 50 metres of the race, the swimmer added a lead of another two seconds to occupy the gold medal, with timing of 2:10.21 minutes.
The championship will continue for one more day, to complete the German team for the upcoming world titles in Shanghai, this July
