Jens Dantorp takes halfway lead at the Scottish Hydro Challenge – Golf News
Four birdies over the last five holes in the second round of the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts allowed Jens Dantorp of Sweden to finish atop the leaderboard, on Friday, June 21, 2013.
The Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts is being staged at the Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club, featuring some of the best players on the European Challenge Tour.
On another low scoring day in Aviemore, the first round co-leaders Alan Dunbar and Byeong-hun An failed to build on to their course record performances – both players carded 62s on day one - and finished second and tied third,
respectively.
Dantrop, in the meantime, took advantage of the great playing conditions and recorded a six-under par 65, to take a one-stroke halfway lead.
He got off to a slow start, as he conceded a bogey on the second hole. However, it did not shatter his confidence and the Swede made a comeback by draining birdie putts on the fifth, sixth and the ninth hole.
The back nine of the course witnessed him recording pars on each of the first four holes that he played, followed by four birdies over the last five holes.
“The course suits my eye,” said Dantorp. “It’s really clear what you have to do, you can see the fairway clearly and the heather is almost purple so you can see where you need to put it.”
“I haven’t really got myself into contention so far this year so hopefully this week will be different. This week I feel something good has happened and I hope I can bring that feeling into the weekend,” he added.
Dunbar, in the meantime, remained in contention for the top spot, despite failing to replicate his first round performance. He carded a two-under par score to accumulate an 11-under par overall score, which allowed him to settle
just one stroke behind the pace.
“I think everybody knows that if you shoot a low score like a 62 it’s unlikely that you’re going to play as well the following day,” he said.
Byeong-hun, on the other hand, recorded just two birdies while losing a single shot to finish two strokes behind Dantrop.
