Jens Lehmann poised for sensational return to Arsenal
Former Arsenal shot-stopper Jens Lehmann is ready to put on his gloves once more to help his old club out of their goalkeeper crisis. Manager Arsene Wenger is set to call upon the German to lend a hand until the injured http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lukasz-Fabianski-c22910
are fit to play again.
Lehmann has not played a competitive match for almost a year, which just goes to prove how desperate Arsenal’s situation has become. Having opted not to sign a goalkeeper during the January transfer window, Wenger has been left with a serious problem after
two of his senior keepers were injured.
Fabianski has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a shoulder problem, and youngster Wojciech Szczesny recently suffered a dislocated finger in the Champions League encounter against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604. The Gunners boss has been forced to rely on the
services of Manuel Almunia, who is currently the only match-ready keeper in the squad.
However, it seems that Arsene Wenger has an ace up his sleeve. The Frenchman is reportedly trying to sign former Arsenal goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Almunia-c23386.
Lehmann made almost 200 appearances for the London club from 2003-08, and was an integral part of the ‘invincibles’; the Arsenal team that went through the entire 2003-04 season unbeaten. However, the German retired from football almost a year ago, last
playing for FC Stuttgart.
There are question marks as to whether Lehmann is capable of playing at the highest level of English football once more, but the man of the moment himself claims that he will give it his all to prove the naysayers wrong.
Speaking on his impending return to the Premier League, the 41-year-old said, “Arsenal currently have a goalkeeping crisis and I jumped at the chance to help them. This time I'm looking forward to being in a back-up role and will look to support Almunia.”
He added, “We can still win the title.”
Arsenal currently lie in second place in the Premier League standings, three points behind leaders Manchester United.
