Jens Voigt positive to continue cycling even at the age of 41
Jens Voigt of Team RadioShack-Nissan has noted that the UCI actions to clean the sport of cycling from the drug abuse has produced positive results and noted that USADA’s detailed investigation into Lance Armstrong case is a new chapter in the game.
The 41-year-old noted that he was shocked to find his former Team Manager, Johan Bruyneel’s involvement in drug administering and trafficking previously in his career.
Voigt marked his professional debut with Team ZVVZ-Giant-Australian Institute of Sport in 1997 and joined Team GAN through 1998-2003 seasons.
He spent a period of seven years with Team CSC, through 2004-10 and finally accepted to join Team Leopard Trek for 2011-12 seasons.
The German helped his side with several top performances in the past seasons including a stage 4 victory at the Volta a Catalunya 2010 along with a sixth overall finish at the Paris-Nice and the Tour of California 2010.
His most recent performance with the Luxembourg team include a stage 4 victory at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge along with a first place finish at the mountains classifications at the race.
When asked about his chances in the seasons ahead, the German was confident as he noted that the cleaner sport will definitely give a better window of opportunity for everyone, ultimately resulting in a much more interesting game.
He told Bicycling.com, "It's true that I sometimes suspected some riders of doping," he writes on Bicycling.com.
"However - and this is important - I never saw anything firsthand”.
“So I couldn't call anybody out, and I wasn't about to focus my energy on something that was not clear. Like I said, it only poisons the soul".
"Again it left me thinking, "Really? So many people involved? And almost so perfectly organized. And such little guilt?”
“I mean 200 names and about 50 cyclists. So many! I found it hard to believe the dimensions that this affair had".
Voigt at the age of 41 is one of the most senior cyclists in the peloton and he is certain to find the right momentum for the season ahead as he lines up to continue his third consecutive season with Team RadioShack-Nissan.
