Jenson Button, Michael Schumacher differ over Fernando Alonso’s new contract – Formula 1 news
Fernando Alonso’s five-year long contract with the Ferrari team has raised many eyebrows in the Formula 1 arena.
McLaren’s Jenson Button thinks that Alonso has hustled in making such an important decision of his life. On the other hand, Michael Schumacher, who had an eleven-year spell with the legendary team, stated that Alonso’s decision is worth every day of it.
Button said, “That's a bloody long time. How does he know what he's going to want to do in five years? That is the thing I can't believe. Why does he need to sign a five-year contract?”
The Brit hoped that Alonso does not regret his decision in the later part of his contract if things in Ferrari do not work out well for him.
On the other hand, the seven-time world champion Schumacher thinks that Alonso’s decision will bring consistency in his performance which will be needed to bring some championships home.
Schumacher, in his eleven-year stint with Ferrari, was able to win five straight drivers’ championships and thinks that Alonso’s performance will improve on his way.
“I believe in continuity, I believe that is part of any success, so I am not at all surprised. I am pretty sure he feels very comfortable where he is otherwise they wouldn't have done that,” stated the legendary German.
Alonso recently extended his stay in the Ferrari team until the 2016 season. The Spaniard’s contract came up at a time when the Ferrari team is struggling in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
However, looking at his 2010 performance, one cannot doubt that a contract was coming his way. As far as the second seat in Ferrari is concerned, Felipe Massa will enjoy the luxury for now but for the next season, the debate is wide open.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel recently stated that his dream of driving a Ferrari car is not shattered by Alonso’s contract. The German added that for now he is happy with his team.
As the 2011 season continues, Massa will be feeling the pressure as some of the great front-running drivers will be eying a switch to Ferrari.
