Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel call for better track safety in future – Formula 1 news
Formula 1 world champions Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel have said that track safety should be improved from what they presently have.
In their separate statements, both Formula 1 drivers agreed that on the street tracks like Monaco, more safety should be induced as crashes in certain parts of the tracks are becoming obvious.
McLaren-Mercedes’ driver Button, who himself crashed into the same place where Sauber’s Sergio Perez crashed on Saturday qualifiers, said, “It's an area where it's very difficult to do anything about in terms of safety, because it is what it is in Monaco.
I still think we need to look further at what we should do. We need to find a solution.”
The Brit further added that once the car gets out of control in the tunnel, there is nothing a driver can do but to brace for the impact. Button himself crashed on the same spot and feels the pain that Perez had to endure in the Monaco qualifiers.
Perez moved outside the driving line and picked up some marbles on his way out of the tunnel. Due to that, he slipped in the fencing before hitting the padding side on.
Defending world champion Sebastian Vettel also feels for Perez and said, “Things like this are a bit of a wake-up call so we have to make sure we learn from this. For the future, here or places like Singapore, it's our job, the drivers' job, to make sure
we defend ourselves.”
The German added that there should be more space on these kinds of squeezed turns so that accidents can be avoided.
Monaco was the first street track on the 2011 calendar which turned out pretty badly for the drivers. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg missed the same spot by inches but Perez was not so lucky and crashed right into it.
The season continues in Canada with the seventh Grand Prix of the season and it will be interesting to see how much the safety improves for the remaining squeezed tracks on the 2011 calendar.
