Jenson Button: McLaren will challenge Red Bull to force mistakes – Formula 1 news
2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button thinks that McLaren will try to put some pressure on the roaring Red Bull team and possibly force them to make mistakes.
It seems that Button has no faith in his MP4-26 and is hoping the Red Bull team to self-destruct. However, Button thinks that some upgrades in the McLaren car will boost his and his teammate Lewis Hamilton’s performance.
“Definitely the Red Bulls are quick and they have a lot of points on the board, but it can all turn around very quickly as soon as you put them under pressure. So we have to make sure that sooner rather than later we start doing that,” commented Button.
He added that McLaren were sitting ducks in the Turkish Grand Prix when no new upgrade was used there. Button added that some upgrades will be tested in the car on Friday and hopefully they might sit well with the car.
“We're all doing our best to improve the car, but we didn't put anything on it over the weekend in Turkey. Hopefully we'll turn up in Barcelona and we'll have more pace. That is what we need, to get more stuff on the car as quick as we can,” concluded Button.
So far, McLaren have been up there with the Red Bull team in terms of development process. Hamilton was able to get rid of Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel from the top stair of the podium at the Chinese Grand Prix. However, after that, McLaren could not keep
up in the development battle and soon were jolted by the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso, who finished third in the Turkish Grand Prix.
Talking about the Turkish Grand Prix, Button said that McLaren will have to work hard because along with Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes are becoming a constant threat.
So far, Vettel has scored 93 points in the 2011 season and is 34 points ahead of second placed driver, Hamilton. At the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, May 22, McLaren’s first task will be to secure a 1-2 finish to close the gap down.
