Jenson Button: New Pirelli tyres will make Formula 1 even better – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button recently stated that the 2011 Formula 1 season is going to be much better because of the fact that the new Pirelli tyres are going to have a significant impact on racing.
Since almost all of the drivers are satisfied with the compounds, they are going to be at their best in the upcoming season.
He believes that the new tyre compounds are going to make racing more exciting for both the fans and the drivers and since the teams have a lot of strategic choice in terms of tyres, it is going to be interesting to see how the teams use these tyres at each
race.
Since the new tyres were revealed, Pirelli has been improving them a lot and the drivers can feel the improvement when they use the super-soft tyre compound.
The wet compounds have not been tested by the drivers in wet conditions properly yet but Pirelli’s official test driver Pedro de la Rosa tested the wet tyres as well and he claims that they feel very good and a bit different in a good way.
“We've tried the different Pirelli tyres - there are big differences across the compound range; not only in terms of laptime, but also with degradation and durability. It's going to be fun for racing, I think, and it's what everyone wanted,” said Jenson.
He also claims that the fans will be able to see the difference even through their television screens.
Jenson Button got his hands on the new McLaren MP4-26 for the first time at the second day of the second pre-season test session in Jerez and he thinks that he is getting more comfortable with the tyres with each lap.
However, since it is just a pre-season test session, the team wanted to gather some data for further processing and as a result, he was not able to push the car to its limits. He enjoyed playing around with the Kinetic Energy Recover System though which
has been reintroduced for the 2011 Formula 1 season after it was banned in 2010.
“The morning was spent getting me satisfactorily fitted in the car, adapting to the hybrid - which is new to me - and getting used to how the system works. I like the power boost it gives you. I felt a lot more comfortable with the car at the end of the
day after we'd played around with a few things in the cockpit,” he said.
Other than that, he was satisfied with the results and he is hoping that the team would get an even better view of what the car is capable of when they will push the car to its limits on Sunday in Jerez.
