Jenson Button: Very important to have number one driver in the team – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button who finished in the second place at the recently held 2011 Singapore Grand Prix delaying Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel from clinching his world championship for this season, has recently stated that it is very important
for a team to have a number one driver.
According to Button, the best strategy for a team would be to have a combination of a number one driver who acts as the team lead, and then a driver who is number two and knows that he is number two.
The Brit speaking to Welt Online said, “We do not have this at McLaren.”
The 31-year-old Brit says that he does not get bothered if his teammate Lewis Hamilton takes the lead in any race, rather he becomes happy that his team did a good job.
He said, “We drive for the same team. A victory is always good for the mood in the team.”
He complimented Ferrari’s strategy in having the Spaniard Fernando Alonso as the team lead as a winning approach.
On the other hand, if we look at Red Bull Racing, Sebastian Vettel’s performance during this season has been a clear indicator that a team’s success is contingent on how well its drivers perform during a particular round. His Milton-Keynes based team currently
tops the constructors’ championship standings, owing to the German’s dominancy over all the other drivers during this season.
Vettel has been victorious at most races held during this season. At the Singapore race, he started off the race from the pole position, drove beautifully with finesse, and finished off the race at first position.
He could have been crowned the World Champion for the 2011 season only if Button had not finished second.
Right now, the only driver who can mathematically challenge Vettel’s championship title is the Brit driver, Button.
The McLarens are currently at the second position on the constructors’ championship for this season.
The next race is at the Suzuka racetrack in Japan. The Japanese Grand Prix is scheduled to be held this weekend, from October 7-9, 2011.
Let’s see how the drivers and teams fare in this race.
