Jenson Button adamant to enjoy the Brazilian round
The McLaren team driver, Jenson Button says that as he heads for the Brazilian Grand Prix this Sunday, he is only looking forward to having fun and a great racing experience.
The British driver excitedly added that he does not want to be over burdened with the pressure of the championship, instead he wants to feel the excitement and thrill of a great racing weekend at the end of the season just as he has enjoyed the entire year.
After the poor finish at the Korean Grand Prix, the driver now stands as an outsider for the championship battle. His chances have dimmed badly after the poor race in Korea last month. After a poor qualifying, he packed up the race at 12th place and walked out of the Korean track without having earned even a single point.
Button presently stands at 5th place in the Drivers’ Championship with his 189 points. On the other hand, the winner of the last round, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari has been escalated to the top of the tally with his 231 points. This difference of 42 points is almost impossible to beat now, as the season is to see only two more races, which means just 50 more points up for grab.
In this situation, many believe that the British driver will give up the hopes of earning the second world championship. However, Button as well as his team proclaims that they will continue fighting until the very end of the rope. The driver further added that mathematically he still has chances.
With the strong resolution of giving his best, as the 30 year old prepares to enter the next race he said, "I've got to go and enjoy myself this weekend. There's a lot less pressure on me because everyone's concentrating on the four guys in front of me. I need to win this race - it's either win the race or it's over. So I'm going to go and have some fun."
While recalling his last year with the Brawn GP team, the British driver proclaimed that he is much relaxed now as compared to the last year. In 2009, though the driver conquered six out of the first seven races, yet by the end of the season he had to face a tough challenge. As the teams entered the Brazilian Grand Prix back then, Rubens Barrichello and Sebastian Vettel got strong positions and posed an immense threat to Button. Now, the defending champion revealed that the pressure and anxiety at that time was much more then what he feels now.
"Last year I felt so much pressure - pressure that I put on myself - because I wanted to wrap up the championship here, and it was just a rollercoaster of emotions on Saturday and Sunday. But coming here now there's just no pressure and I can really enjoy the weekend. It's the smallest chance that I still have of clinching the title, but while there's still a sliver of opportunity I will fight to the end,” he said.
On the other hand, his McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton stands at a much better place in the championship tally. With his 210 points he is only 21 points adrift the charts’ topper, Alonso. As the British pair has had a very healthy relation all through the season, Button exclaims that he has always thought of helping his teammate if required, but at this moment he does not think his tug is yet over.
"If I couldn't win the race - which is the most important thing to me - I would never be told to give up position because that's not legal, but I'm an intelligent driver, I don't need to be asked that question," Button concluded saying.
