Jenson Button admits McLaren behind rivals in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button has admitted that McLaren are way behind their rivals in terms of performance and development in the 2013 Formula 1 season.
The veteran driver had a terrible outing in Canada, where he was unable to secure even a single point. He was not the only one who suffered, as team-mate Sergio Perez also failed to make it to the top-10 in the end.
This was really disappointing for Button, but he is hopeful that things will be a touch better in the upcoming British GP, as the track characteristic will be different from what they were last time around.
According to the 2009 world champion, “We are developing the car at the factory which is great. But we’re still a long way behind…we’ve got to make sure we maximise everything. When you do that and you get a fifth place, you’re pretty happy about it. You
still want to win…but when you think you’ve got everything out of it and you couldn’t have done any more.”
Although Button agreed that title chances are over this year, he was confident that things will turn around during the next season.
He added, “Definitely next year we will start the season looking to win the world championship. And that includes winning the British Grand Prix. We are still a great team and we will fight back and we will win races again.”
McLaren have always been competitive in the sport and have given an opportunity to their drivers to fight for the championship. However, things have really gone bad for them this year and they will be hoping to make an improvement by the end of 2013. They
have got better resources than most of the teams on the grid, which means they are bound to be back on the podium once again.
At the moment, the Woking-based team has decided to focus on their current car rather than next year. Although they have been struggling to score points with consistency, they could still end up fighting for podiums in the final few races.
Last year, Button finished the season on a high with a victory in the Brazilian GP. He will be hoping for the same this time around in order to gain some confidence back.
