Jenson Button believes Fernando Alonso has strong lead in drivers’ championship – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that Fernando Alonso of Ferrari has performed remarkably well in the season until now and has a huge lead over all his rivals in the championship fight.
Alonso is presently leading the drivers’ rankings with 164 points. Moreover, he is 40 points ahead of Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing who has a lead of just 2 points over his teammate, Sebastian Vettel.
The Spaniard is the only driver who has claimed three grands prix victories in the season until now and has been deemed as the most competent contender for this year’s championship.
Even though, the British driver said that it is extremely difficult to challenge the two-time world champion in the season ahead as he has a strong lead over all the other drivers. Nevertheless, he said that everyone is trying hard to come up stronger in
the upcoming race after the summer break in order to reduce gap to the front.
He also said that nothing can be predicted about the second half of the season as the battle is still going on amongst the drivers at the top.
“Fernando's lead is massive still. He is 40 points ahead of anyone. Even if he finishes fifth in every race, the guys in front are going to be fighting it out for points. Not one person will win the next four races. He needs a retirement really, but everyone
will be taking points off each other. There are so many people at the front fighting for victories,” he said.
Besides, he said that he is targeting to improve his pace in the races ahead and is positively looking forward to deliver his best to secure a competitive position in this season’s championship.
Although, he said that it is very hard for him to fight for the championship title, nonetheless, he said that he will strike at his best to secure as much race wins as he can in the approaching season.
“I want to enjoy the races and fight for big points. I'm still a chunk behind the second pack, but you can close that gap up pretty easily,” he added.
