Jenson Button believes Fernando Alonso is surely fighting for the title – Formula 1 News
McLaren's driver, Jenson Button, has said that Fernando Alonso of Ferrari is surely fighting for the title, therefore, he didn’t push too hard to gain positions in the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix.
Alonso performed inspiringly well in the Spanish GP and managed to claim his second victory of the season after taking a start from 5th grid slot. However, he could only secure 7th place finish in the last
race at Circuit de Monaco after qualifying for 6th grid position and didn’t try to take any risk of overtaking.
Button said that despite being one of the best drivers in the world of autosport, the Spaniard decided to play safe in the preceding race because he is fighting for the championship.
“They always say at Monaco the cream rises to the top,” the McLaren driver told Press Association Sport. “If you put yourself in a good place in qualifying that is maybe the case, but in the race I'm not so sure.”
“I think the brave will always do well around Monaco, but there's a fine line between bravery and something else. You can see that with Fernando, someone who is regarded as the best in F1, yet who went backwards,” he said.
“Fernando is obviously fighting for the Championship, and you could see that with the way he drove,” he added.
The 31-year-old is presently standing at third place in the drivers’ championship with 78 points. Besides, he is ahead of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and behind his main rival, Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.
Even though, he has struggled with some reliability issues due to which he could not attain competitive results for his team in a couple of races. Nevertheless, he has efficiently limited the damage for his team and has secure
two victories and a podium finish in the season so far.
The competition is going to be even tougher in the upcoming races as all the teams are making essential developments in their cars. It will be really exciting to see how the Scarlet team performs in the season ahead and whether
the two-time world champion will be able to win the title or not.
