Jenson Button believes McLaren will be relentless in their 2012 campaign – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button says that the McLaren’s developmental plans are very ambitions and the team is looking to leave the opponents behind in an attempt to be cutthroat in their ambitions of being number one.
Button won the first race of the season in Australia and has given the perfect start to the team. Red Bull is not far behind and looks good. The team will have to do well throughout the season in order to keep Sebastian Vettel at bay.
Vettel did not do well in the qualifiers and started the race placed 6th in Melbourne but finished the race right behind Button. Even though Vettel said that the Brit was unbeatable on the day, it would be unwise to think that Red Bull cannot match them
in the season.
“After the race, people asked me if we'd expected to demonstrate the pace that we did in Australia, and I tell them that it was unexpected,” Button said. “Of course, we'd done our sums after winter testing, but you can never be certain whether another team
is running with high-fuel or hiding their true pace. So to come away from race one with such a positive result - Vodafone McLaren Mercedes took pole, fastest lap and the victory - is a huge relief for the organisation. But it's also incredibly motivating:
we know we have a great car but we're not going to sit still with it.”
Button did add that he did not know that the car would turn out to be the quickest on Sunday and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
Button has been praised for his performance in the race on Sunday, it was a show of sheer brilliance, but it will be important to note how goes about his business in the remaining races as different conditions will be a good test of his skills.
A positive for McLaren is that both Button and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton are very competitive drivers and that will drive the team to better results.
It will be interesting to see how McLaren fares during the season as Red Bull Mercedes and Lotus try for the top spots. The second Grand Prix in Malaysia is scheduled for March 25, 2012.
