Jenson Button believes Michael Schumacher receiving undue criticism – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button believes that Michael Schumacher critics need factor in the level of competitiveness when they criticise him over his comeback performance.
The seven-time world champion returned in 2009 with the Mercedes team under Ross Brawn. His comeback performances have not been what was being expected by all. It was a work in progress for Schumacher and Mercedes as the German worked to make a winning car
and develop the team to win races.
The 2011 season saw the team finish low in the Constructors championship. The start of 2012 though was speculated to be a year where Mercedes would be able to do well. The new Mercedes car was developed good and had the pace to win races.
The speculation was confirmed after Nico Rosberg recorded his maiden victory in China. After the race it was clear that Mercedes could come up with wins, but luck did not side with Schumacher as he has been struggling so far in the season.
Out of the six Grands Prix, so far in the season Schumacher has only been able to finish two races. The retirements though have not been his fault, and team principal Brawn did admit that the team has let Schumacher down.
Button has come in defence of the Mercedes driver and has said that the competition in the season is so fierce that no one has been able to dominate. He added that people are underestimating that fact.
“Michael's come in for a lot of criticism over the last couple of years since he's been back,” said Button. “I think we all forget what he achieved in his previous career, if you want to call it that.”
“Sometimes it takes time to feel comfortable with a car and comfortable with the people you're working with. But I think he put a great lap together, didn't make any mistakes and he obviously deserved it very much,” he added.
It will be interesting to see how Schumacher performs in Canada the track is pretty straight forward and the long straights will benefit the Mercedes car. The race is scheduled for June 10, 2012.
