Jenson Button believes he is in contention for 2012 championship – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button believes he is a serious contender for the 2012 drivers’ championship title.
Button last won a title back in 2009 and was very impressive in the 2011 season coming in second on the drivers’ championship standings. In a year where Red Bull was clearly in an advantage because of its front facing off-throttle blown diffuser design,
the McLaren driver performed consistently throughout the season and claimed three Grand Prix wins.
“We haven't quite won the world championship in the last two years, but I have won quite a few races with this team and I feel that our time is coming,” Button said. “We are in a very good position. And it couldn't be better really so we are very excited
about 2012.”
“We have spent two years together now. It has flown by, and it is quite scary that it has been two seasons already,” Button added.
Button said that the 2011 season has improved him as a driver and made special note of the Japanese Grand Prix which the Brit said made a marked improvement in his driving skills and ranked it the strongest race of his career.
He mentioned that the circuit had been his favourite and it has a lot of pace in it, therefore the circuit was very helpful to the Red Bull cars but he eked out a win on that track. He said it was doubly special as he wanted to do something special for the
Japanese people who had suffered so much due to the Tsunami disaster.
McLaren is tipped to be a strong contender this year, and it has been speculated that the Red Bull will not have the same dominance as it had in 2011.
“My aim was to arrive at McLaren and win races, and be with a team that can always give me a chance of winning the world championship,” he said.
It would be interesting to see how well Button has really become after his last season showing, his teammate Lewis Hamilton will also be looking to improve his performance after a horrid 2011 season. That is going to increase the competitiveness of both
the drivers and McLaren are going to benefit from the aggressive competition.
