Jenson Button believes the team needs to be more competitive in Hockenheim and Budapest – Formula 1
Jenson Button thinks that it is vital for the team to make the most of the coming two races at Hockenheim and Budapest.
Button believes that the McLaren needs to utilise the next two races to stamp its authority at the grid. The Woking-based team has been slipping in performance in the last couple of races.
Button has been struggling for a few races now with the tyres and lack of pace while Lewis Hamilton has had his ups and down in the season. The last race at Silverstone was a poor one for Hamilton as he looked dismal in his home race.
The Brit started the race from 8th place and at one point in the race was in a position to challenge for the top spot battling it out with Fernando Alonso but started to fall back on the grid and finished 8th in the race.
After the race, Hamilton was clearly frustrated and disappointed over his performance and admitted that the team needs to work hard in order to make the car competitive enough to challenge the top teams of the season.
McLaren in the earlier stages of the season was considered to be the team to beat in the season but since has slowly lost its way. The team believes that it is the set-up of the car that needs tweaking.
“Performance-wise, I still think it's difficult to accurately predict where we stand in the competitive order - Valencia and Silverstone were certainly difficult races for us, but I don't think they were truly representative of our pace,” he said. “This
year, you really need a problem-free build-up to the race if you're going to maximise the car's potential - and that's exactly what we'll be hoping for in Germany next weekend.”
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh claimed that the whole team is very focused and are looking forward to performing well in Germany.
“There is a huge resolve within the operation to ensure that our aggressive development strategy is upheld across the summer,” he said. “We are determined to narrow the gap to the championship leaders before the start of the summer break.”
