Jenson Button competes in triathlon
For many, a three-week summer break in Formula One should be a time to relax and recharge your batteries for the final races of the season. Not for Jenson Button.
The reigning world champion was not putting his feet up, but instead competing in the London triathlon yesterday, which is an annual event consisting of a 1.5-kilometre swim near east London’s Docklands ExCel centre, a 40-kilometre bike ride and a 10-kilometre run.
The 30-year-old was raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, of which he is a patron. The foundation aims to deliver wishes for children and young people with life-threatening illnesses.
Button competed in the triathlon last year and finished second in his age category, but this year, he came home in a slower time of two hours, 14 minutes and 14 seconds.
“I wasn't feeling very well at the start of the week, which is why I have come in a bit slower than last time round. I really didn't want to miss out on the weekend though as I had such a fantastic time here last year so I just decided to battle through it,” said Button.
Now the focus is on retaining his world championship this year.
