Jenson Button content with his performance but admits there is room for improvement – Formula 1
Jenson Button has said that although he was able to eke out a point out of the race it was not desirable for the team.
Button started his race from the back end of the grid and worked his way up to tenth place. It was a difficult race for the McLarens and his team-mate Lewis Hamilton had a rough race as well.
Hamilton also said that he could not understand why he was not able to get the pace out of the car to challenge the top teams. Button has been struggling with the same issue for some races now.
Both drivers have said that the team will have to work hard and tweak a few things in the car in order to challenge the top teams in the season.
McLaren was considered to be one of the favourites for the season but lost his way in the last few races, struggling to get the pace out of the car.
Yet Button said that it was a tough race it was good to score the point that he did, although admitting that McLaren is a front line team and they should not be fighting for such points.
“It was good to get a point in my Grand Prix, but of course that's not what we ought to be doing: we're a front-running team and we've got a bit of work to do to start running at the front again. I don't think we made any mistakes with our strategy today;
we're just not quite quick enough at the moment, that's all. Most important of all, though, I'm a bit sorry for the Silverstone fans, because they've been truly amazing this weekend. Like them, we wanted a lot more from today's result. So we're sorry, guys;
we weren't able to fight at the front today, but hopefully we'll be back there soon,” he said.
Team principal Martin Whitmarsh said that the team was not planning for a dry race and had it been a wet race the team would have achieved more and showed better competitiveness relative to what was on display during the race.
It will be interesting to see how McLaren deal with the issue their drivers have raised and how well are they prepared for the next race in Germany.
