Jenson Button expecting KERS advantage over Red Bull Racing Team in Malaysia
McLaren’s Jenson Button, has recently stated that he is hoping for better results at the Malaysian Grand Prix, as he believes that KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is going to help McLaren take an advantage over Red Bull Racing Team this weekend.
KERS was reintroduced this year after it was introduced initially back in 2009. It is a device, which converts Heat Energy into Kinetic Energy, and, then stores it for later use.
The driver can then use that energy in order to give his car a sort of a boost whenever he desires according to the amount of energy stored in his respective car at that time.
McLaren has the best record statistically with KERS, as they are the only team out of the two teams to win a race with KERS in 2009. And up until now, it seems that they are the only ones, who are close to the pace of the RB7.
Button believes that since his team has a better understanding of the device, they will try their best to maintain its advantage in this area.
“That's good for us. We need a powerful KERS to compete against them [Red Bull] because in every other area they are very competitive. At the moment I think we're a long way from Red Bull. I get the impression that Seb is yet to show the full potential of
that car”, said Jenson.
On the other hand, McLaren’s Managing Director, Jonathan Neale, recently warned against underestimating Red Bull’s KERS potential as no one is aware of their system yet.
“I'm not sure that he [Button] would know about Red Bull's KERS. Certainly I don't know anything about its system. I think from the basis of Mercedes Benz, which builds our system, with an extra 12 months of experience compared to others then there should
be advantages to do with systems integration and packaging”, said Neale.
Red Bull Racing Team dominated the season opening grand prix that took place in Australia and they revealed that they did not use KERS due to some reliability concerns. Either way, Red Bull dominated throughout the weekend and it is expected that they will
use KERS in Malaysia.
