Jenson Button expecting close competition at upcoming Canadian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that he is expecting a very close battle between the top running teams of the 2011 Formula 1 season, Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and McLaren at the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix.
The 2009 Formula 1 champion made this statement after the two practice sessions of the Canadian GP which took place on Friday.
Both the sessions of the upcoming grand prix were quite eventful and surprising in terms of results. After a number of accidents and two red flags in the second practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix, Button was the fifth fastest driver of the day and
stated that the upcoming race is going to be quite tough.
“We didn't do any low-fuel running on the Supersoft because of the two red flags, so we just filled the car up and sent it out at the end of the afternoon. It's pleasing that the car felt pretty good on high-fuel. The Red Bulls are quick, so are the Ferraris,
the Mercedes and ourselves - I think it'll be a little bit closer than it's been in the past few races,” Button said.
Other than that, he added that the disruption caused by the red flags and the incidents made it quite difficult for the drivers to set up their respective cars properly. The former world champion stated that the Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit is not an easy track
for the drivers as a single mistake can lead to a crash quite quickly. He explained how McLaren ran their testing period as well.
“We did some high-fuel runs on the Option tyre; it was key to get some laps on the Supersoft. It's all useful information and I'm confident we can still improve the car's balance on low-fuel,” he said.
The first session was led by Nico Rosberg in the timesheets while Fernando Alonso was the fastest driver of the second session. Alonso was followed by Sebastian Vettel which was quite unexpected as the reigning world champion could not fully take part in
the first practice session.
