Jenson Button eying victory in Australia - Formula 1 news
McLaren’s lead driver Jenson Button believes that he will be in a position to fight for a victory in the Australian GP, scheduled to take place on Sunday, March
17, 2013.
Moreover, he is confident that his team will be stronger in terms of development compared to the rest of the pack.
While most of the teams have made a few tweaks to their 2012 challengers, McLaren have opted to make some major suspension and aerodynamic updates, which will allow
the team to expedite their development pace.
According to Button, “It’s a very long season and we want to be able to develop all the way through the year. And whereas some teams might come with a car that
they used in Brazil with a few tweaks to it, which means they will be strong at the first race, they won’t be able to develop like us through the year.”
He went onto say, “So that is the idea that we have but still we want to be quick at the first race, we want to win from the word go. It’s possibly going to be
a tough race for everyone because it seems so close at the moment. But we still go to Melbourne aiming for a victory.”
Other than McLaren, top teams such as Ferrari, Lotus and Mercedes are looking quite confident about their chances this season. Even the midfielders such as Sauber,
Williams and Force India believe that they have a solid chance of fighting for podiums.
However, reigning world champions Red Bull seem to be worried because of their lack of pace. They have been dominating the field for the past several years, but
the preseason testing in 2013 suggests that they are lagging behind, when it comes to straight line speed. If that is the case, both their drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel will have to need a lot of luck in order to fight for victories.
However, rival teams believe that Red Bull are strong enough to battle at the front and still have an edge over their main competitors. They might not be locking
the front row of the grid in qualifying, but their race pace is certainly going to make a positive impact.
