Jenson Button fails to stay ahead of Sebastian Vettel at the Abu Dhabi GP – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button failed to score a podium finish due to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel overtaking him after a thrilling battle at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this Sunday.
McLaren did not have a good race despite the fact that both Button and teammate Lewis Hamilton had shown challenging pace in the three practice sessions over the weekend. Hamilton was also successful at gaining pole position for McLaren. However, his car
came to an abrupt halt during the twentieth lap of the race after which he had to retire; something that has been very common for him this season.
Button had been driving at third position for most of the race but after a safety car deployment due to the HRT and Mercedes collision, Vettel easily overtook him due to his new tyres.
“It was quite a fun race, but at no point did I have pace,” Button said. “I really struggled; very different to my run on Friday as I just couldn't find the grip - really, really strange. It was fun all the same, I had some good battles out there but just
at the end it was impossible because he's on brand new tyres, and you just can't get traction on old tyres - especially old prime tyres and he's on new options - so it was very difficult, but that's the way it is.”
Vettel put forward a fantastic race after he passed many cars to attain his third position on the podium despite the fact that he started race from the pit lane due to his disqualification on Saturday.
McLaren had lost its second position in the constructors’ championship to Ferrari after the Korean Grand Prix and had been looking forward to achieve this position once again with the remaining races in the season. However, with Hamilton having failed to
score any points in this race and Button only scoring a fourth standing, McLaren has lost the chance to overtake Ferrari.
Button is still hopeful that they will be scoring some more points with the two races remaining in the season. Hamilton has also expressed his wish to win another race for the team before he leaves next season.
