Jenson Button hopes MP4-27 will help McLaren to go a step further than 2011 – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button says that he hopes for an improved and much more competitive MP4-27 than its predecessor.
McLaren did a relatively good job relative to other teams but when Red Bull comes into the fray, they start to look as distant performers at the grid. Such was the domination of the RB7 throughout the season that it made major teams like Ferrari, McLaren
and Mercedes rethink its strategies to be competitive again in 2012. Red Bull managed 12 wins in the 2011 season compared to McLaren’s 6.
Button was particularly good in the season and did really well to finish 2nd in the drivers’ championship keeping Mark Webber– the second Red Bull driver– from snatching the 2nd place position with three Grands Prix victories recorded in the season.
The season performance helped Button to be considered as a force to be reckoned with as he did well to finish higher than his teammate Lewis Hamilton who had a poor season because of both on and off-track issues.
Button said that he is hoping the new car will benefit the team build on the momentum it had in 2011.
“With the regulations remaining relatively stable, we've really been able to focus on the detail with this year's car,” Button said. “I still think we had a very fast package last year and our race pace was almost always fantastic.”
“I'm really looking forward to getting behind the wheel in Spain next week. I know that everyone will be watching us very closely to see what progress we make during the pre-season tests, but I genuinely believe we have every reason to feel optimistic about
the progress we've made and our competitiveness this year,” he said.
It would be interesting to see how well Button can perform in the 2012 season as he is in serious contention for the world title assuming the MP4-27 lives up to the hype.
The first glance of the MP4-27 in action will be on display at the first pre-season test scheduled to be held on January 7, 2012. The season begins on March 18, 2012 with the Australian Grand Prix.
