Jenson Button hoping for a competitive teammate even if he leaves McLaren – Formula 1 news
The 2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button has said that he is hoping for a competitive teammate alongside him throughout his career even if he leaves McLaren.
Button claims that his current teammate Lewis Hamilton is the most competitive teammate he has ever driven with and he is hoping for a similar competition if he leaves McLaren as well which might happen in 2012.
“We all want to work with a team-mate that's focussed on achieving, you always want to push yourself and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to be here at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes to work alongside Lewis, and to work alongside someone that's won a world
championship but that's also committed and fighting for another one I think it really pushes you on,” said Button.
Since Felipe Massa’s seat at Ferrari is quite uncertain for 2012 at the moment, there are rumours that the team is willing to sign Jenson Button as a replacement for the 2012 Formula 1 season which is a pretty good opportunity for the former world champion.
If Button joins Ferrari next year, his teammate Fernando Alonso is definitely going to be at least as competitive as Hamilton which is exactly what Button wants. However, since both of the teams are on an even keel in terms of pace, it seems that leaving
McLaren is going to be a pretty tough decision for the Jenson.
“I don't know what's going to happen in the future, obviously, but wherever we are in the future I'm sure we'd want to be with a driver who is competitive and really wants to fight, not a driver that wants to play second fiddle,” said the 2009 Formula 1
champion.
However, Lewis Hamilton has also been linked with the Red Bull Racing team since the past couple of months as Mark Webber is on a year-to-year contract with the team. It is believed that the 2010 defending champions are hoping to make their drivers’ line-up
even more competitive by having two champions alongside each other.
