Jenson Button hoping to challenge Sebastian Vettel for 2011 championship – Formula 1 news
The 2009 Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button has said that he is hoping of challenging the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel for the drivers’ title in the ongoing 2011 season despite the fact that Red Bull Racing are dominating the season quite
clearly in terms of statistics.
Since Button won his first race this past weekend in Canada, he now believes that McLaren have now proved that they can beat Red Bull in difficult situations as well but added that this win did not give him any sort of confidence boost.
“I wouldn't say that winning in Montreal has given me extra motivation, because I was already totally committed, but I think it will help to sharpen the focus and conviction of everyone in the team. We've proved we can challenge and beat Sebastian [Vettel],
and we know we can fight for this world championship,” said Button.
Vettel is currently 60 points ahead of Button in the drivers’ standings and since Red Bull Racing have a perfect pole position scoring result so far this year, McLaren would really have to come up with something big in order to challenge the reigning world
champions for the titles.
However, there is a ray of hope for McLaren as it has been confirmed that the Blown Diffusers will be banned from the sport starting from the British Grand Prix which is after the upcoming race that is expected to take place in Valencia as the European Grand
Prix.
“I'm looking forward to Valencia. I had a good race there last year and I think the track shares some of the characteristics of Montreal and Monaco, so I'm confident that we'll be competitive again,” said the former world champion.
Either way, covering up for the ground McLaren have already lost is not going to be easy for the team and it is going to be interesting to see how the team plans to bounce back in terms of pace at the upcoming races as compared to the current pace setters
Red Bull.
