Jenson Button insists Sergio Perez can deal with increased pressure – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver, Jenson Button, has insisted that his new teammate, Sergio Perez, is capable of dealing with increased pressure which is going to come with joining McLaren in 2013.
“I think there is more pressure, but you're not afraid of the pressure because this is what you think you're very good at doing,” said Button. “When you're good at something and you think you're good at something, you don't feel that pressure is much at
a competitive organisation and a team like McLaren. So there is more pressure, but I don't think he's going to feel it.”
Button also thinks that the issue about Perez scoring no race points after his deal with the British team was an exaggeration.
“I think there's been a lot of pressure on Checo, especially with all the stuff that's been said in the media,” Button added.
Button said that they need to let Perez continue in his own way. He told that the Mexican driver is going to be preparing with his new team during the winter break and only the next season will tell how he performs. However, he stated Perez has already proved
that he has the pace and understands about a race car.
Lewis Hamilton, the driver Perez is replacing, shocked the F1 community with his transfer to Mercedes after driving for six years with McLaren which also include a championship victory. Team principal, Martin Whitmarsh, then selected Perez saying that he
was really impressed with his podium finishes for Sauber F1 which is Perez’s former team. Later on, Whitmarsh admitted that it was a risk taking on the young driver but he still has the potential to learn.
Meanwhile, despite all the pressure and underestimating from the media, Perez looks quite determined as he said that he is looking forward to winning the world championship in his very first year with McLaren.
Perez made his debut in F1 with Sauber in 2011. He secured three podiums this past season; in Malaysia, Canada and Italy. In Malaysia, his second place was attained behind Ferrari’s championship runner up, Fernando Alonso, after an intense driving against
him.
