Jenson Button likely to sign contract extension with McLaren-Mercedes – Formula 1 news
It has been revealed that McLaren driver Jenson Button is likely to sign a contract extension which will keep him with the side beyond the 2012 season.
McLaren driver Jenson Button was recently linked with Ferrari as it was revealed through some reports that the 2009 Formula 1 world champion was offered Felipe Massa’s spot.
Massa has been quite disappointing since his return to the sport back in 2010 and since then, the team has been coping up with his problems in order to enable him to perform at his best.
However, even in 2011, Fernando Alonso has been performing much better than the Brazilian as a result of which, it is believed that it is time that Ferrari are going to let go of Massa.
Due to these widespread rumours, reports suggested that McLaren are even willing to increase Jenson Button’s annual salary at the team in order to keep him with them. It is expected that an announcement regarding this matter is expected to be made in the
coming few weeks.
“For me it makes no sense to sign a long-term contract. I don't know how I'm going to feel in a few years. I can't imagine racing at 40. I just want to race for as long as I can win. McLaren has an option on me for next year, that's all I know. Many of my
colleagues don't hesitate to secure for the long term, but I like it when my future is open,” Button told the media before these rumours started.
Nevertheless, none of the parties has spoken about this issue yet and the details regarding Jenson Button’s extension has not been revealed either.
Luca di Montezemolo on the other hand stated in an interview that he is willing to keep Felipe Massa for another year but now, it seems that the team has changed its mind. It now seems that the Brazilian will not be a part of the team in the 2012 season.
Let’s see how this transpires.
