Jenson Button not expecting much from his team McLaren at the Australian GP - Formula 1
McLaren’s Jenson Button has recently stated after the first day of the final pre-season test session that took place in Barcelona that he is not expecting much from his team at the season opening race that is expected to take place in Australia on the 27th of
March.
He stated that his team might be “trailing” its rivals Ferrari and Red Bull Racing Team, at the season opener as he believes that his team still has a long way to go before matching the pace of its rivals.
Jenson drove for 74 laps in his MP4-26 at the first day of the final pre-season test session and he believes that his team has made a lot of progress.
“I'd be surprised if we can really match the Red Bull and Ferrari when we get to Melbourne. I think that's a big ask considering the mileage that we've had compared to them and the pace at the last test compared to them. I think that's going to be tricky,
but never say never,” he told media at the Circuit de Catalunya.
He was quite impressed with the improvements the team made to his car though but claims that the team will work even more on the set-up this week in order to try to get as close to the front running teams as possible.
He added that the car’s competitiveness is currently on a turning point of its progress and both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson are going to try their best to make the most of the final pre-season test session in Barcelona.
“There's still more work needed to be as quick as Red Bull or Ferrari or one or two teams, but we're moving forward and that is a good feeling. This is only the first day of a four day test and we hope for a lot more mileage tomorrow and set-up work,” said
Button.
It would be interesting to see what Hamilton says about the MP4-26’s progress after he tests the car tomorrow in Barcelona though to see how the two drivers are evaluating the current situation of their new car.
