Jenson Button of McLaren-Mercedes admits they lacked consistency this season – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button of McLaren-Mercedes team has admitted that they lacked the consistency shown by the Red Bull Racing team during this season.
He has attributed this as a major contributing factor for their lack of performance and current second position in the 2011 constructors’ championship.
He believes that his team needs to work hard in this area if they wish to challenge the competitive Red Bull Racing team in the next season.
Button thinks that the team’s performance during this season was not consistent. The Woking-based team had a slow start to the season but they made a strong comeback in the second half of the season. Since everything happens so fast in the world of Formula
1 that if a team wishes to be on the top and wants to maintain its dominancy over all the other teams, it has to perform well right from the start.
When asked to reflect on their 2011 performance, Button said, “We had a terrible winter and our first long run was the Australian Grand Prix.”
He further added, “We did a bit of a recovery there but we plateaued out, we didn't make enough progress. We regrouped and made a bit more progress and along the way we had some great progress.”
The 31-year-old Briton has had three wins from this season, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton who was surrounded by controversies and rumours for most part of the season, has two race wins so far.
Button said, “We've won some races and come close to winning, but we haven't had the consistency throughout the year like Red Bull and Sebastian. One weekend we'll be fighting for a win or get a win and then two weeks later we won't be so competitive - that's
something we need to look at and sort out for next season.”
Admitting that although their performance this year has shown a tremendous improvement from 2010, he is still not so happy at the way things happened this season as the results achieved could have been way better given the kind of car they had.
With talents like Sam Michael joining the technical department of the team, Button expects the 2012 season to be extremely successful for the team.
The McLaren team did have a really fast car to their advantage this season but when compared to the car of RBR, it was not fast enough. Let’s see how they fare in the next 2012 season.
