Jenson Button of McLaren-Mercedes inks new multi-year contract with team – Formula 1 news
McLaren-Mercedes driver Jenson Button has inked a new multi-year contract with his team, putting to rest uncertainty over his future with the side.
The negotiations, which went on for months, have confirmed that Button will stay with the side beyond the 2012 season as well. The exact details of the contract, however, have not been revealed yet.
A delighted Button said, “I've never felt more at home at a team than I do at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. I've won four of the greatest races of my life here, I'm currently lying second in the drivers' world championship, and I feel that I'm driving better
than ever.”
Button talked about his achievements with the Vodafone-sponsored side and said that he believed he can do a lot more while staying with the team in the future. He vowed to win more races and possibly championships with the Woking-based team.
McLaren team principal, Martin Whitmarsh was delighted at the development and termed Button as one half of “the best driver line-up in all of Formula One” along with Lewis Hamilton.
“Jenson is a great driver and a great guy,” Whitmarsh said. “In fact, I can safely say that he's one of the most capable and respected drivers we've ever had, and I'm therefore absolutely delighted that he'll continue to work with us into the future. He's
a considerable credit to this organisation, and I'm proud to be his team principal.”
Button’s teammate, Hamilton also expressed his happiness over the contract extension of Button and said the Brit is a genuine team player. He said it was a great moment for him when he won the world championship with the McLaren team. Hamilton also vowed
to continue winning races and championships in the years to come.
Let’s see what impact does this development has on Button’s performance in the remainder of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
The next race of the 2011 calendar begins this weekend, October 7 in Suzuka, Japan.
