Jenson Button of McLaren-Mercedes prefers race wins over runners-up position – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button of Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes is more focused on grabbing race wins as opposed to finishing in the runners-up spot in the 2011 drivers’ championship.
Button feels that winning races would add more value to his overall performance of this season when compared to his rivals.
The 31-year-old Briton has shifted his focus for the remaining races, and wants to make it to the winning step of the podium for the two races that remain in the 2011 Formula 1 calendar.
Button is in a really good form at the moment after returning from India, where he clinched second position ahead of Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and he feels that with his present form he might once again be able claim a victory just like he did at this year’s
Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka.
So far, Button has won only thrice in the ongoing season compared to his rival Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing team’s 6 fantastic wins. Not just that the 24-year-old German has been declared as this season’s champion which earned him the twin title of
being the youngest ever driver to clinch this spot and also made him the consecutive title winner.
“It's nice to know that if I do finish second I will have beaten a Red Bull (Webber), which is good,” Button speaking to the Press Association said.” Sebastian has done an unbelievable job this year, but he still has a team-mate, and to beat a guy
in a Red Bull is great every time.”
He admits that Fernando Alonso of Ferrari is at a very competitive position at the moment, with the Italian squad bent on making sure that Spaniard ends up at the runners-up spot for 2011.
Commenting on the challenge he faces from the Ferrari side and his team mate, Button said, “And when Fernando is in tune with his car, it's great to beat him because he is super fast, and then there is also my team-mate who is unbelievably quick. So yeah,
it would be nice to finish in front of them in the championship.”
He is optimistic that given the dominant position that the British squad is in right now, his chances of grabbing another race win at the upcoming weekend’s race or at the season’s last race in Brazil are very bright.
The penultimate race of this season is due to take place this weekend, November 13 – 15, 2011 at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
Right now, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber are the two drivers that are in the chase for the runners-up position along with Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes who also stands a mathematical chance of ending second on the drivers’ championship.
Let's see what surprises are in store for us at the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Whether or not Button will be able to achieve a winning spot, we have yet to see.
