Jenson Button overtakes Sebastian Vettel in final lap to win Canadian Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Formula 1 driver Jenson Button took a last lap lead from Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel to take his first victory of the 2011 Formula 1 season at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The rain-interrupted Canadian Grand Prix was stopped after only 25 laps when heavy showers hit the track.
Button had an eventful outing as he started the race with no hopes of winning it after having an accident with his teammate Lewis Hamilton in the seventh lap of the race and then being handed over a drive through penalty due to over speeding during the safety
car.
Still Button was able to overtake three drivers in the last few laps of the race to take the win.
Behind Button, Vettel ended the race in second when on the very last lap of the race the German over shoot the last chicane and lost the battle to the Brit.
Vettel’s teammate, Mark Webber ended third in the race. Webber also had an incident in the opening laps of the race when his car spun after a collision with Hamilton.
Still the Aussie was able to take the charge and finished on podium.
Seven-time Formula 1 champion, Michael Schumacher of Mercedes team finished fourth in the final standings, which is his best result in the 2011 Formula 1 season. The German was once eyeing a podium finish when he was second. However, Schumacher was soon
overtaken by Button and Webber.
Renault’s Vitaly Petrov finished fifth and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa finished sixth in the final standings.
Massa restarted the race from third place but soon found himself stuck behind Petrov and only managed a sixth place.
Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi grabbed seventh place in the Canadian race and had some pretty good battles with the front running drivers.
Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari managed eighth position after starting the race from pits as his team was unable to get his car on the grid in time. Williams’ Rubens Barrichello completed the top ten drivers list.
The next race of the 2011 Formula 1 season will be held in Valencia on June 26.
