Jenson Button reveals that his car was damaged during qualifiers at Hungaroring – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button has revealed that he damaged his car during the qualifying at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Brit finished at fourth grid position at the qualifiers for the race, a result that he will be happy about since he has been struggling to perform in the season.
Button revealed that he was hampered by some damage to his car that he picked up during the session. He added that it is nothing major and will be fine before the race. The positive sign is that he was able to finish fourth even with some issues to his car.
Button’s team-mate Lewis Hamilton was able to hit pole making the pair finish in the top five. This gives a relatively struggling McLaren a good opportunity to rake in some vital points for both the Constructors’ Championship and the Drivers’.
McLaren is placed third in the constructors at the moment behind Red Bull and Ferrari. Mercedes have been looking to close in on the gap between them and McLaren but the team has been struggling with the pace of their cars.
Button admitted that Hamilton looks to be the man to beat so far at Hungaroring.
“I think Lewis has shown all weekend that he's been very, very quick,” Button said. “It wasn't assured that he was going to get pole position but he's obviously driven very well this weekend and he's got the balance and he showed that by the lap time in
qualifying. For me it was a little bit trickier in qualifying; I struggled a little bit more to get the pace and the balance.”
He added the he was unaware as to how or what he hit to damage the car and in what session it was. Even without the damage he was not going to be able to catch up to Hamilton.
“So fourth isn't too bad; I think if you can look at it as a bad day and still be fourth I think that's reasonably good and we can race very well from there tomorrow,” he said.
It is shaping up to be an interesting race tomorrow at Hungaroring.
