Jenson Button says KERS issue affected his performance in 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that losing the Kinetic Energy Recovery System during the 2011 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix affected his performance.
Button added that he is not sure his pace was entirely there during the race or not on the set of soft tyres by Pirelli, but by lap 13 and 14, he did not have any KERS, which was not great.
The Brit suffered with the KERS issues during the Abu Dhabi race and due to that, he could not finish the Grand Prix at the top or second position after starting the race from the third position on the opening grid.
Talking to reporters, Button commented, “In the next stint they [the team] said what I could do to get KERS back, and I got it back, but it only lasted two laps so I had to keep resetting it. The problem's not just when you accelerate, but it's under braking
too. You get a certain amount of engine braking from it when it's working, but every time I arrived in a corner I didn't know what to expect.”
He went on to mention, “I had to fend off Webber and Massa, which was quite interesting without KERS. Coming home third I'm relatively happy.”
The 2009 world champion came at the last stair of the podium in the final Abu Dhabi race classifications on Sunday, November 13 after running at the Yas Marina Circuit.
The Woking-based outfit driver added that he hopes he will not have KERS issue in the last round of the 2011 Formula 1 season, which is scheduled to be held on November 27 in Brazil.
Despite having KERS problems in the Abu Dhabi race, the team driver stated that he is happy with his third place finish and that it is a fact the race was interesting at the Yas Marina Circuit.
After taking part in the 18 races of the ongoing season so far, the McLaren driver is placed at the second position ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso with 255 points in the drivers’ standings.
Let’s see how the 31-year-old driver manages the last round of the season at Brazil.
