Jenson Button says McLaren were lacking luck until Montreal when Vettel panicked – Formula 1
McLaren’s Formula 1 driver Jenson Button has stated that his team had everything in the 2011 Formula 1 season except luck which was hindering their way towards a race victory.
Button added that Sebastian Vettel’s mistake in the very last lap of the Montreal race was the final ingredient needed for the McLaren team to step up.
The Briton jumps up to second position in the drivers’ championship courtesy a fantastic drive in the last stint of the Canadian Grand Prix.
The Brit stated, “In the last three races now, as a team, we've proved we have pace in the race. But we just found we'd not had that last little bit - which is luck. In Canada we definitely got the luck at the end. So that bit of luck at the end, with Sebastian
making a mistake, I think we fully deserved it.”
He further added that the team was looking for that extra bit of luck in Monaco as well when the car was challenging enough to take down the German’s glory.
From the last few races, it became evident that the Red Bull team are not going to run away with the title in 2011. Although their pace in the qualifiers was genuine, yet in the race they were lucky enough to win races in circumstances where McLaren and
Ferrari were faster.
However, the luck factor is going to be subtracted from team’s output as the International Automobile Federation (FIA) has tightened up the rules around engine mapping changes from qualifiers to race.
Talking about engine mapping rule, Button stated, “It could go our way, it might not, and we’ll have to see. Qualifying is still not there for us, but in the race we can race anyone wherever we go.”
He further added that the FIA is changing a lot of rules in the 2011 season which will spice up the proceedings of the season.
McLaren are currently second on the constructors’ table with 186 points. The next scheduled race of the season will be contested in Valencia on June 26, 2011.
