Jenson Button says Red Bull will not have head start in 2012 – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver, Jenson Button feels quite confident about his performance in the upcoming 2012 Formula 1 season and expects the team to be closer to the defending champions, Red Bull Racing.
The British driver was the runner up during the last season after Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull who won the championship. However, Button is feeling very positive about the performance of McLaren and believes that they are in quite a good form after the successful
pre-season testing.
Moreover, he said that they could challenge their Milton Keynes contender right from the first round as compared to the last year in which the performance of the team was hindered during the testing because of some issues which caused restrictions.
Furthermore, he said that the front-runner, Red Bull could not be able to produce the planned results in the last day of the final test at Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona after the up gradation of the car.
“It's great that they've brought a big upgrade because it takes everyone's attention off our car,” he told Britain's Guardian newspaper. “They seem to have a very different rear end system than they had before, but just having different pieces of bodywork
doesn't mean it's a massive chunk of lap time. They'll be quick, but we don't know how quick.”
However, he said that Vettel would still be the favourite for the upcoming championship title because he had won two consecutive championships during the last two seasons.
“Sebastian is still the favourite because he is the double world champion, but I feel that the field will be bunched up a lot more now. Red Bull won't have the advantage they had out of the blocks last season,” he said.
Button felt confident mainly because of the upgrades the team had made in the MP4-27 as compared to the upgrades of the rival, Red Bull’s RB8 which did not prove out to be favourable for the defending champions during the final day of the last test.
Regardless of the confidence, Button denied to rule out his rivals which include even Ferrari which had been struggling throughout the pre-season tests.
