Jenson Button says Sebastian Vettel fast catching Fernando Alonso in championship – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button of McLaren believes that it would not be easy for anyone to cover the lead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso except for Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.
Button made it to the podium at the Singapore GP but he believes that the championship title war is mainly fought between Alonso and Vettel, although other drivers are trying for this title as well but it will not be easy for them.
The McLaren driver told BBC Sport, “It's hard for anyone [to catch Alonso] except Seb at the moment. It's between those two but there's still a lot of people with a long shot. That's what we're all going to go for.”
The other driver of McLaren, Lewis Hamilton was the runner up before the Singapore GP but he could not make it to the finish line thus loosing precious championship points. Button believes that one bad race can have adverse effects in terms of championship
points. Several drivers have suffered some bad race in the current season.
“It just shows one bad race makes a massive difference. Fernando had his in Spa, Lewis had his in Spa and here, Seb had his at the last race. I had mine in the last race. When no-one has the consistency you can't close a big gap on someone. Seb is only 29
points behind, that's a gap that's shrinking,” he added.
He added that it is not encouraging for the team that once again one of its drivers was unable to make it to the finish line. Besides, he admired McLaren for being able to achieve strong speed over the circuit.
Furthermore, he said that they have been able to give impressive performances in the last few races but they have not been able to do it with both cars. One of the McLaren’s driver exhibits impressive performance while the other ends the race struggling
with some issue. He added that they should work on making McLaren reliable in the remainder of the current 2012 season.
McLaren has shown strong speeds over the circuit significantly after the upgrades they have introduced in their car. Let’s see how the British team performs in the remainder of the season.
