Jenson Button says he is aiming for a top position in 2011 drivers’ championship – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that he is aiming for a top position in the 2011 Formula 1 drivers’ championship after achieving his second race victory in the season.
Button also mentioned that he is not aiming to only race in the ongoing season but he wants to fight for the 2011 title during his next races.
Both of the drivers Button and Lewis Hamilton have won Formula 1world championships in the past. However, Button said that they are not interested to be in second place in the 2011 constructors’ championship, as he believes they can win more.
Talking to reporters, the 31-year-old driver said, “We have won world championships so we are not interested in being second. We want to be top. I wouldn’t race this season just wanting to beat my team-mate – I am not aiming for Lewis, I am aiming for the
top.”
The 2009 world champion added, “You don’t think about [fighting each other], you are thinking about position. We had a good little scrap and were wheel-to-wheel through turn one, which was close. If it had been with other drivers, I would have been off the
circuit.”
Button went on to say that they are fighting for the team’s success from the start of the season, but due to an unsupportive role of their cars they have been unable to perform well during the few races of the 2011 Formula 1 season.
In the recently held 2011 Hungarian Grand Prix, Button won his second race of the season. After winning the race in Budapest, he is confident for the second part of the campaign.
His teammate Lewis Hamilton was 48.3 seconds off the pace of Button in the Hungarian Grand Prix. He ended his race in the fourth spot behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso after struggling a lot.
McLaren team is in the second place in the 2011 constructors’ championship with 280 points. There is a gap of 103 points between McLaren and the leading team Red Bull for this year’s championship battle.
Let’s see which team wins the 2011 championship at the end of the season.
