Jenson Button says it is crucial to decide the time of retirement – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button of McLaren says that the decision related to retirement it is of key importance as it should be made in proper and right time.
He said that in the 2009 season when he won the championship, he could have retired. He added that this was the time after which he signed contract with McLaren.
Furthermore, he said that after two years have passed, he believes that his current contract with McLaren would not be his last contract and wants to continue his career.
Button said in a recent interview with Britain’s Mail newspaper, “When I won the world championship and my [McLaren] contract was done, I definitely felt that I could also finish my career.”
Moreover, he said that he does not want to end his career without rational thinking as others have. He added that he has experience of other drivers. Furthermore, he said that driving is his passion and everyone does not get such an opportunity to fulfil
his desire.
“But now, two years further down the line, I don't feel that this contract will be my last one,” he said.
He added that he believes that once a driver wins a championship, people expect that he will be winning races forever. Furthermore, he said that drivers are not given a day off by people and it is very difficult to live under such a pressure.
The British driver said, “I sat and thought about what was going to happen next. I knew that, from that point, coming second would never be good enough. Once you become a champion, people expect you to keep coming first.”
Button currently holds 7th place in the drivers’ championship with 76 points, just one point behind Nico Rosberg of Mercedes. In the Hungarian Grand Prix held July 29, 2012, he finished the race at 6th place after starting from 4th grid position, picking
up eight championship points.
In the current 2012 season, it has happened four times that he was unable to make it amongst the top ten drivers despite starting the season by winning the Australian Grand Prix.
Let’s see how he regroups himself after the summer break.
