Jenson Button says luck is required to understand Pirelli tyres in wet conditions – Formula 1 news
McLaren driver Jenson Button is of the opinion that factor of luck is required to understand the Pirelli tyres in wet conditions.
The British driver believes that weather conditions play an important role in racing as they are directly linked with the tyres. He said that weather conditions played an important role last year for Ferrari as they faced problems when the mercury was low.
Furthermore, he feels that in this particular year, the temperature issues with the tyres are most prominent and when the circuit gets wet, they face a lot of problems.
Button said, “I have never felt it like this, but I have had temperature issues for most of the year. In the wet we are nowhere.”
He added that in wet conditions the car loses grip and it feels as if the car is skating on the circuit. Moreover, he said that the chances of accident are more in such weather conditions which also adds to the fear of the driver.
“The tyre isn't working, it's just skating and you spend the whole time so fearful that it is just going to send you off into the boonies,” he added.
He praised the efforts of his team, McLaren and said that the team has brought good developments to the drive but they are only effective in dry conditions.
He said, “We have found a lot of time in the dry with the new things we have brought here. But in the wet we still have the same issues of tyre temperature.”
The 2009 world champion mainly focuses on the tyre temperature because he believes that the road grip of the vehicle is dependent on the tyre temperature, and during a wet circuit, the temperature gets affected and hence leads to decreased road grip on the
circuit.
Button was able to finish the German Grand Prix with a second place after Sebastian Vettel received a post-race penalty and was dropped to 5th place.
However, several teams struggled due to wet conditions in the qualifying round. He believes that it will require a lot of efforts in introducing developments with which drivers would have better control during the wet conditions.
