Jenson Button sends warning signal to Sebastian Vettel for 2012 title challenge – Formula 1 news
2011 Japanese Grand Prix winner Jenson Button says it meant a lot to him to win at Suzuka, but even amid all the celebration, he is focused on the championship challenge in 2012.
The Brit beat Fernando Alonso of Ferrari by just 1.1 seconds in what was a perfect end to a thrilling race. Button passed his teammate Lewis Hamilton and crossed Sebastian Vettel in the pit stops on his way to the finish line. He praised his team as well, and said that his team’s performance was impeccable and winning at the legendary Suzuka circuit was a special feeling.
Talking about the iconic Suzuka circuit, Button said, “We love this place, so to get a victory here, in front of such an amazing Japanese crowd really does mean a lot. It's a big thanks to the team for the improvements we've had over the last few races and today they've been impeccable, so congratulations to them and congratulations to the fans; I think that we put on a good show for them today.”
Button showed his intent for the next 2012 season, when he mentioned that he really wanted to win a lot more races this season, but it did not prove out to be the case.
Vettel’s dominant show meant that he only needed one point to secure the 2011 title, and his third place finish gave him just that. Button though now is all the more focused on 2012 and the championship challenge.
“Winning from the front you could say is boring, but it's something that I haven't done for a little while, so winning from second on the grid does mean a lot to me,” Button added.
The 31-year-old said that he and his team will be going for wins in the next four races this year, which will prove to be a launching pad for 2012 if they can achieve that.
However, he did say that looking too far head can hamper current performance, so he will try not to get too involved in that.
Let’s see how Button and McLaren fare in the 2012 season but for now though, Button and his team can celebrate an enthralling win at Suzuka.
