Jenson Button talks about his fears and aspirations
Jenson Button, the McLaren driver returned from Monza last week with a mixed feeling of joy as well as distress. Though he is happy having scored eighteen points at the last race, after ending at second
place on the podium, yet losing first place has made him sad.
As the Formula One Caravan gets ready for the next race of the season to be held at Singapore, the British driver talked to Planet1.com expressing his views and experience of the Italian Grand Prix.
He started off telling that the Italian Grand Prix last month began pretty well for him as there was even a point when he thought that the victory was not an unachievable goal for him, however, now he
thinks that the damage to the rear of his car cost him the victory.
At the first lap of the race, Button was hit by Fernando Alonso, the Ferrari driver, who later won the race as well. The collision caused a little damage at the floor of the McLaren car, for which now
he said, “I was quite surprised that we were able to have such good race pace given the damage to the floor.”
He further kept on telling that some of the analysts believe that McLaren lost their first place due to a not well knit strategy, however he is of the view that their real disadvantage was their car which was not one of the fastest
of the day. "So I think the team played its card properly, it's just that there were a number of factors that were always going to work hard against us to ensure that a victory was difficult," he gave his analysis.
The competition between the top five racers in the Drivers’ Standings has grown very tough now as they stand at a difference of just twenty four points from each other. At the last race in Spa, Sebastian Vettel, Button and Fernando
Alonso were unable to score any points however at this race Button took the opportunity of scoring some good points while his teammate, Lewis Hamilton came out pointless. On the other hand, Mark Webber bagged only eight and Vettel secured twelve points.
"I think we've seen that no one driver's going to walk away with the world title - there's going to be a fight right to the very end," he further added.
He was further asked about what strategy the team was going to follow in the upcoming races for which he told that each race demands a different strategy. He explained saying, “I think that driving just to score a certain number
of points isn't in a racing driver's psyche: I felt that a little bit last year, I knew I only had to keep scoring consistently to take the title, but that was probably more mentally taxing than just putting your head down and going for it.”
He exclaimed that the way the situation has become now consistency has become the sole key for the rest of the season.
He concluded telling that now the most decisive thing will obviously be the fastest car as all the top five people are putting in their best. McLaren had come a long way as far as the car’s pace is concerned yet they still do not
have the fastest car of the season. Hamilton declared quite openly during the mid of the season that they have the third fastest car of the season and they have to pull really hard to stand head to head with Red Bull and Ferrari which are both way faster than
McLaren.
Well, racing is all about pulling hard, combating with pressure and stress, physical and mental and the next five races will, be a real test of this for the top five men.
