Jenson Button unimpressed with Michael Schumacher’s Italian Grand Prix run – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button has recently stated that the former Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher’s run at the Italian Grand Prix was more defensive as he was defending his track position from Lewis Hamilton which was not so bright.
Button luckily finished in 2nd place as he took advantage of a very competitive battle between Hamilton and Schumacher which lasted for around 16 laps.
“I thought he was moving quite a bit with Lewis. I had such a good run on him [Schumacher] and came on him so fast that he couldn't move a lot. It would have been very dangerous. But with Lewis he was moving across to the left and then to the right, which
I don't think was all that bright,” he said.
The 2009 Formula 1 world champion took advantage of their battle and overtook both of them in a single lap. In the end, Schumacher was unable to finish ahead of Hamilton though as he finished in 5th place while the 2008 Formula
1 world champion secured the 4th place behind Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.
Mercedes GP boss Ross Brawn on the other hand claims that this was the best performance this season by the 42-year-old and he proved that he still has the capability of competing with the best in the sport.
“He settled into a really tough battle with the McLarens, particularly Lewis, which was great racing and vintage Michael. We haven't quite got a car that's quick enough yet but we are all pleased with Michael's fifth place,” said Brawn.
It was a very disappointing race for McLaren though as the team could have won the race easily if they made a good start after the restart of the Italian Grand Prix. The race was restarted after a long safety car period.
The team lost a lot of ground and keeping in mind that they had the best car on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix statistically, this could have been McLaren’s race if they had thought out the situation of the race in a much better way.
