Jenson Button wants to put the mistakes of 2012 F1 season behind him – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s Jenson Button has admitted that he wants to put the mistakes and problems from the 2012 F1 season behind him and move on.
“I have got a great team behind me,” he told Autosport. “Starting the 2013 season, if we can start strong like we did this year, I feel that the mistakes and the problems that we have had, hopefully we can put behind us.”
With Lewis Hamilton leaving McLaren to join Mercedes in 2013, Button will be taking lead of the team about which he is very excited.
He added, “For me being the experienced one in the team, I really like that and I'm looking forward to working closely with the team, not just being the driver but actually working closely with the aerodynamicists, the engineers, and the designers to really
keep pushing in the direction that I want.”
He told that they he is not an expert on the engineering that is involved in the development of the car but he does drive and he knows how he wants the car to work for him. He said that they are going to utilise the winter break and them make a strong start
to the upcoming season.
McLaren had begun the 2012 F1 season on a good note when Button won the Australian Grand Prix but as the season progressed, the British team’s performance gradually became disappointing. Both Hamilton and Button displayed good pace on many occasions but
the reliability issues kept hindering their progress. Hamilton had to retire from many races including races that he was leading. In September, Hamilton announced his transfer to the Mercedes team.
McLaren became better towards the end of the season with a very strong qualifying pace. Hamilton won the penultimate race in United States which also became his last victory with the team. Hamilton had to retire from lead once again during the season ending
Brazilian GP which was then won by Button.
There were reports that Hamilton was leaving because he had an unsettlement with the team but he insists that he is leaving because he wants a new challenge. He has also admitted that McLaren is his home and he might return in future.
