Jenson Button wins 2012 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps – Formula 1 news
Jenson Button of McLaren registered his second victory of the 2012 season at the Belgian Grand Prix, held yesterday at Spa.
He was followed by Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull driver, whereas the third place on the podium was attained by Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus.
A devastating crash eliminated Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton of McLaren, Romain Grosjean of Lotus and Sergio Perez of Sauber. A safety car period was then applied with Button leading Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta.
Despite of the huge crash, at the first corner, Button proved that one pit stop strategy was the best strategy for Spa, by finishing the race in 1 hour 29 minutes and 8.530 seconds. He was followed by Vettel with a gap 13.6 seconds who had started the race
at 10th grid position.
The third place on the podium was secured by Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus. He sustained his 3rd grid position, making it to the finish line after, 25.3 seconds, Button concluded the race. He adopted a two stop strategy. It appeared that he struggled with a KERS
problem.
Nico Hulkenberg of Force India made it to the best finish of the season, by making it to the 4th position after starting the race at 11th grid position. He was followed by the Brazilian Felipe Massa with a gap of 2 seconds only.
Mark Webber of Red Bull could only make it to the sixth position after having started the race at 12th grid position.
Michael Schumacher of Mercedes ended the race at 7th position despite fighting for the 5th position. He struggled with his 6th gear 7 laps prior to the finish line. They had adopted a two pit stop strategy but the second pit stop was taken in the last ten
laps. His gap from Webber was 22.1 seconds.
Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo of Toro Rosso and Paul di Resta of Force India completed the top ten position of the Belgian GP respectively.
Romain Grosjean of Lotus suffered a one race penalty and a 50,000 Euros fine for causing the crash during the first lap of the race. He has been involved in several other first lap crashes during the current 2012 season, but this was the most serious crash
of the season.
