Jeppe Huldahl leads the Challenge de Catalunya on day one
Jeppe Huldahl carded a sparkling eight-under par round of 64 to race into the lead through the opening day at Challenge de Catalunya.
Huldahl started off on the back nine of the course and stunned his opponents by signing seven birdies on his scorecard before the turn.
His back-nine start was not an impressive one, as he bogeyed two of the first four holes that he played.
However, he still managed to open up a one-stroke lead over Chris Doak by making a run of three straight birdies, starting from the fifth hole.
Last week, he participated in the ALLIANZ Golf Open Toulouse Metropole and recorded his best finish in four months. He took the share of the 13th place on the leaderboard.
According to him, he sought to keep the momentum going into the rest of the tournaments, remaining on the European Challenge Tour this season.
This week, he seems to be on the right track, as he did not allow any of his competitors, at the Golf La Graiera in Northern Spain, to surpass him on the leaderboard.
“My putting was really good,” said Huldahl, whose sole Challenge Tour win came at the Lexus Open in 2008. “I was disappointed with my bogey on the fourth hole but there are so many good holes to look at in that round. My iron play was really good, I hit
it close, left easy putts and holed them”.
The Dane struggled with his form right from the beginning of the 2012 European Challenge Tour season.
The second-place finish, at the ALLIANZ Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne, was the only highlight of his performance this year.
Talking to the reporter on Thursday, he told the main reason behind his poor form early this year. He said that his daughter was born with some problem in her brain. Therefore, he was not able to completely focus on his game.
“I have a nine month old daughter and she was born with a problem in her brain so we have spent seven months going through hospitals and surgeries,” he said. “She is fine now but it did put lot of weight on my shoulders for a while”.
