Jered Weaver and Erick Aybar power Los Angeles Angels to 11-2 victory over Baltimore Orioles
The Los Angeles Angels were on a path to redeem their ambition to finish first on top of the American League West on Sunday, September 16 against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park in Camden Yards. Much to manager Mike Scioscia’s approval, the victory
came in style as Erick Aybar powered the hitting line up to an 11 runs standing, while Jered Weaver restricted the Orioles to just two runs. The Angels avoided a clean sweep with an 11-2 win.
Weaver pitched six innings, conceding just two runs off six hits and two walks. He is now 18-7 with an earned run average of 2.41. Alfredo Simons, on the other hand, had a very bad night on the mound for the Orioles. The starter pitched five innings, conceding
six runs off eight hits and one walk. He has moved on to his ninth loss of the season with an earned run average of 4.96.
The game kicked off with an early run from Erick Aybar as the short-stop put his name on the score sheet after Bobby Abreu smashed a double to right.
Angels were 1-0 and the Orioles did not take long to respond. Nick Markakis scored for the team when Vladimir Guerrero punched a triple through right-field. With the score even at 1-1, Aybar entered the frame again in the top of the third with a defiant
homer to right-centre.
The Angels moved to 2-1 and the homers’ show had just kicked off. Vernon Wells smashed the second homer of the game in the top of the fourth. His hard hit got Alberto Callaspo past the home plate in style as the Angels were now 4-1.
The show had not ended though as the Angels pulled in another two runs when Aybar homered for the second time in the encounter, leading Jeff Mathis in for the score. Los Angeles moved on to 6-1.
Marthis and Aybar scored in the top of the sixth again for two more runs. This time they were led home by a Howard Kendrick’s two-run RBI double. The team moved on to a score line of 8-1 and it was left to Guerrero to pick up things from Baltimore’s end.
The former Texas Rangers star smashed a homer to centre-field off Weaver.
Things were not looking good for the Orioles as they were 2-8 behind. Their problems got worse in the top of the eighth when Jo-Jo Reyes replaced Jason Berken on the mound. He allowed Peter Bourjos to walk and then steal second base, while striking out Jeff
Mathis.
The Angels scored their ninth run through Bourjos immediately as Erick Aybar smashed an RBI double. He scored the tenth afterwards when Howard Kendrick came on to the strike zone to single out to right-field. The score was 10-2 and the Angels were not done
yet.
They scored the final run through Kendrick who ran home on a Torii Hunter single. The game ended in a disappointing manner for the Orioles. Nevertheless, they picked up an important series win with a 2-1 standing at Oriole Park. The Angels are however back
in the chase as they put in a brilliant performance in the game. They are 4.5 wins behind the Rangers.
